About the Artist |
|
Maia was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. She then received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2002, where she studied painting, drawing, and sculpting. She also intensively studied portrait painting and figure sculpting at La Universitat Politécnica de Valencia. By 2002, her artwork had already been exhibited in China, Spain, and several galleries in Pittsburgh. |

She then she moved to Hawaii, where she continued to paint, study, and exhibit. Influenced by the Asian culture of Hawaii, she decided to move to Japan. She there studied Japanese and shuji (calligraphy), before ultimately returning to the U.S. and settling in Orlando. Since then, she has been both painting and sculpting with a new passion to share her cultural experiences with others.

She works in a variety of mediums, including oil, charcoal and, most recently, bronze. Throughout all of her work, however, the aim is the same. So many of us walk through our lives not noticing that which is around us, the beautiful or the not so obviously beautiful, the silhouette of a building against undulating clouds or the graceful gesture of a woman’s hand. She feels that her job as an artist is to capture these unnoticed “gorgeous moments” and bring them to the attention of her viewers.

|
She tries to recreate the essence of her memories in color, light and texture. For her, every work has a sense of nostalgia, telling a story about the people and places that she has known. Currently, she is working on a series of paintings about her experiences living in Japan. |
